Description: Joseph F. Byrnes, Ph.D., will discuss his book GOD on the Western Front: Soldiers and Religion in World War I at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT/6 p.m. MT/5 p.m. PT. Byrnes is professor emeritus from Oklahoma State University. His démarche is reflected in world religions, social and institutional history of Christianity, and religious and national identity in modern France. James Smith Allen, author of A Civil Society: The Public Space of Freemason Women in France, 1744-1944 (2022), commented, “Joseph F. Byrnes’s insightful book explicates the inexplicable—that is, the confluence of God-talk and nation-talk among theologians, clergy, the faithful, and the irreligious during a major challenge to Western civilization itself.” Byrnes’s other major publications are An Anglo-Catholic Visionary for Modern America: Gordon Butler Wadhams and "The Way of Christ” (2023), Priests of the French Revolution: Saints and Renegades in a New Political Era (2014), Catholic and French Forever: Religious and National Identity in Modern France (2005), The Psychology of Religion (1984), and The Virgin of Chartres: An Intellectual and Psychological History of the Work of Henry Adams (1981).
