Colonel Paul F. Braim Student Paper Prize
The award is a $250 prize for the best undergraduate and/or master-level graduate student paper on an aspect of World War I (1914-1918). Papers nominated for this award may not exceed 3,500 words in length excluding footnotes and works cited. The paper submission shall be in Times New Roman 12-point font and include footnotes/endnotes in The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition format. The award committee also reserves the right not to award a scholarship based on the quality of submissions received. Further information related to submission dates and paper criteria will be posted on the website each spring.
2025 WINNER: The Board of Directors are pleased to announce that the inaugural recipient of the Colonel Paul F. Braim Student Paper Prize was awarded to Ali Kimlinger from the University of Ottawa
(Canada) for her paper “L’Etoile du Nord: Minnesotans in the Canadian Expeditionary Force,
1914-1918.” Kimlinger’s faculty supervisor was Dr. Serge Durflinger, professor of history.
Kimlinger is a M.A. Candidate with the History Department at the University of Ottawa. She
studies American and Canadian military and international history, with a particular focus on
World War I. She has presented her research at conferences in the United Kingdom and across
North America and enjoys visiting the battlefields in Belgium and France. She also holds degrees
from the University of Manitoba and University of Minnesota in political science, and she
previously worked in Canada-U.S. relations at the Consulate General of Canada in Minneapolis.
Kimlinger will receive a certificate of recognition and a monetary award. Gratitude is expressed
to Dr. Johannes Allbert, Dr. Timothy Westcott, and Andrew Pouncey who served on the prize
committee.
